DTE Energy is beginning work in two neighborhoods near Hamtramck MI as part of a pilot program to bury five miles of power lines underground. Adrienne Roberts has the story for the Detroit Free Press."Undergrounding, the process of burying power lines, is one of the measures DTE is taking to reduce the frequency of power outages, along with trimming trees, putting smart devices on the grid that help to reroute power quickly and pole top hardening (rehabilitating the equipment at the top of the poles)."Customers who have underground services experience more than 30% better reliability compared with customers with overhead lines, according to DTE data gathered between 2019 and 2021...."#powerdelivery #powerindustry #undergrounding #powerlines #gridresilience #gridreliability #gridmodernization #gridhardening #underground #power #electricity #powergrids #michigan #strategicundergrounding #damageprevention #criticalinfrastructure #construction #criticalinfrastructureprotection #PDi2https://lnkd.in/g67FAZDb

DTE to bury power lines in Detroit.Beginning next month, DTE will start work in the Davison and Buffalo-Charlesneighborhoods as part of a pilot program to bury five miles of power lines underground. The goal? To lessen the amount of power outages. The program will also coordinate electric and gas infrastructure upgrades, aimed at reducing both inconvenience for its customers and costs for the utility. The Detroit Water and Sewerage Department plans to replace some water mains and all existing lead service lines in the neighborhood in conjunction with DTE’s project, Bryan Peckinpaugh, a spokesperson for the department, said.DTE is among other utilities around the state and country that are considering undergrounding power lines in order to reduce the frequency of outages. Jackson-based Consumers Energy is embarking on undergrounding pilot programs to study resiliency improvements, targeting circuits in Genesee, Livingston, Allegan, Ottawa, Montcalm and Iosco counties that have frequent, lengthy outages and are in areas with dense trees. The utility's plan is to move about 400 miles of power lines underground annually.#detroitmichigan #dte #electricutility #infrastructure #electricitydistribution #waterlines #gaslines #buryingservicelines #stormresilience #stormrestoration

#gridreliability right here in Central Florida. Great work City of Winter Park. While not failproof and bit costly, underground utility lines are more resilient to heavy storms, improve aesthetics, and have added value in terms of safety (no power poles to run into and no downed wires). #transmissionlines #electricalsafety #grid

Buckhead.com reports on Georgia Power Company's plan to bury electric power lines in several Buckhead, Ga., neighborhoods. Construction is expected to begin this spring and last approximately 12 months."The work is just one part of Georgia Power’s 'Grid Investment Plan,' a major, multiyear project of systemwide improvements. The goals are improving the reliability of Georgia’s electric grid and lessening the impact of any failures. The company is about two years in the first phase, for which it is spending $1.3 billion."Improvements are not performed randomly. 'We are making strategic grid investments, selecting project locations based on historical service and performance data to ensure that we are putting our resources in the right places to improve reliability,' said [Georgia Power spokesperson Marie] Bertot."#powerdelivery #powerindustry #undergrounding #powerlines #gridhardening #powergrids #gridresilience #gridreliability #gridmodernization #damageprevention #gridresiliency #strategicundergrounding #underground #power #electricity #criticalinfrastructure #construction #georgia #powergrid #criticalinfrastructureprotection #damageprevention #electricgrid #PDi2 https://lnkd.in/g4ipKHch

The end is now in sight for BC Hydro’s historic use of two sizeable properties in downtown Vancouver to fulfill critical electricity supply needs, reported Daily Hive."The utility has longer-term plans to decommission the substation in Chinatown at 781 Main Street, known as the Murrin substation — located at the northwest corner of the intersection of Main Street and Union Street, immediately east of Andy Livingstone Park, and south of Chinatown Parkade. Also eyed for decommissioning is the Dal Grauer substation at 944 Burrard Street, located mid-block between Smithe and Nelson streets — immediately adjacent to Scotiabank Theatre and Robert Lee YMCA.""BC Hydro spokesperson Susie Rieder told Daily Hive Urbanized both existing substations, which are aging and do not meet long-term electrical demand, will continue to operate and serve Vancouver until the mid-2030s. In order for both substations to be decommissioned, two new replacement facilities need to be constructed."https://lnkd.in/gfsr_259#vancouver #redevelopment #powersubstations
