LAUDERDALE AND HOLLYWOOD, A BIG TIME RAIN THERE. THIS IS ALL PART OF THIS LOW PRESSURE THAT SITS OFF THE CAROLINA COAST. YOU SEE THAT CIRCULATION RIGHT THERE, THE TRAILING MOISTURE BEHIND IT. THAT’S WHAT’S FLOODING FLORIDA. THAT IS HAVING AN IMPACT ALONG THE CAROLINA COAST. METEOROLOGIST GRIFFIN HARDY JOINS US LIVE AND LOCAL RIGHT NOW WITH MORE ON THE IMPACT THIS IS HAVING TOWARD THE COAST THERE. HI, GRIFFIN. HI, CHRIS. YEAH, IT’S CAUSING SOME CHOPPY SURF DOWN THERE TOWARDS THE COAST. AND THIS IS A HEADS UP FOR ALL THE PEOPLE WHO ARE ON THE FREEWAY. ON THE FREEWAY HERE, HEADING DOWN TOWARDS THE BEACH. YOU WANT TO BE AWARE OF THE RIP CURRENT RISK, WHICH IS GOING TO BE A LITTLE BIT HIGHER THAN USUAL OVER THE NEXT COUPLE OF DAYS. AND LET’S TALK ABOUT EXACTLY WHAT A RIP CURRENT IS. SO A RIP CURRENT IS JUST A CHANNEL OF WATER THAT FORMS ALONG THE COAST. ANYTIME THAT THE WINDS ARE STRONGER THAN USUAL, THE SURF IS CHOPPIER THAN USUAL AND MORE OFTEN THAN NOT, WHEN THE WINDS ARE GOING PERPENDICULAR TOWARDS OR AWAY FROM THE SHORE. VERY DANGEROUS TO SWIM IN AND THEY CAN BE A LITTLE BIT HARD TO SEE. YOU’LL NOTICE LITTLE CALMER PARTS OF THE WAVES. THAT’S TYPICALLY WHERE A RIP CURRENT FORMS AND THE BEST THING TO DO IS IF YOU GET CAUGHT IN A RIP CURRENT TO SWIM PARALLEL TO THE SHORELINE, THAT IS THE BEST WAY TO ESCAPE A RIP CURRENT. YOU DON’T WANT TO SWIM AGAINST IT BECAUSE YOU’LL RUN OUT OF ENERGY MORE OFTEN THAN NOT. NOT BE ABLE TO OVERCOME THE STRENGTH OF THAT RIP CURRENT. SO THE BEST THING TO DO IS THAT IF THE WINDS ARE TOO CHOPPY AND THE SEA IS TOO ROUGH OUT THERE, UH, JUST TO TRY TO AVOID SWIMMING, IF YOU CAN HELP IT, IF IT LOOKS A LITTLE BIT TOO CHOPPY, IT PROBABLY IS. AND WE TALKED TO FOLKS WHO WERE SAID THEY WERE ON THEIR WAY TO THE BEACH, HEADING IN, HEADING DOWN TOWARDS THE COAST THIS WEEKEND. HERE’S WHAT SOME OF THEM HAD TO SAY. I HAVE NOT KNOWN ANYONE, BUT MY WIFE IS A BEACH BUNNY AND SO THERE ARE DAYS THAT YOU GO OUT AND DEFINITELY, UH, GET SUCKED OUT A LITTLE BIT AND HAVE TO MAKE THE DECISION WHETHER YOU SHOULD STAY OR NOT. AND EVEN THOUGH THAT, UH, TROPICAL INTEREST LUCKILLY STAYS OUT OF OUR WAY HERE IN THE UPSTATE, UH, IT’LL BE PRETTY NICE HEADING INTO THE WEEKEND. JUST HOT. UH, CHRIS WILL HAVE MORE ON THAT WEEKEND FORECAST FOR YOU. COMING UP IN JUST A FEW MINUTES. FOR

Invest 90-L could bring some rough surf and the risk of rip currents to the South Carolina and North Carolina coasts through the weekend. The system is moving back out into the Atlantic after bringing heavy rain to parts of Florida. The National Weather Service says there is a moderate risk of rip currents in the areas highlighted below: In those areas the NHC says longshore currents can sweep swimmers and surfers off their feet, making it difficult to return to shore. Invest is short for "investigation" and refers to a weather feature that the NHC is investigating. It should be noted that it is not necessarily an area that is expected to develop into a tropical system. It’s simply an area being investigated for any number of reasons. Here are the latest graphics on the system below:
