What to Know

Critics Consensus

The Laundromat misuses its incredible cast by taking a disappointingly blunt and unfocused approach to dramatizing the real-life events that inspired it.

The Laundromat | Rotten Tomatoes (1) Karen Han Polygon Streep as Ellen is also wonderful, and only gets more fun to watch the closer her unassuming, middle-aged character gets to unraveling the machinations of the unfathomably rich. Oct 21, 2019 Full Review The Laundromat | Rotten Tomatoes (2) Roger Moore Tribune News Service If you're lost, you're not alone. The evidence suggests Soderbergh and his screenwriter were, too. Rated: 2/4 Oct 19, 2019 Full Review The Laundromat | Rotten Tomatoes (3) Adam Graham Detroit News Soderbergh keeps the heavy themes light and even playful, and Streep rides the film's sardonic wave in a double role that sees her donning a garish disguise as a Panamanian office worker. Rated: 4/5 Aug 13, 2023 Full Review The Laundromat | Rotten Tomatoes (6) Elizabeth Garcia But Why Tho? A Geek Community The Laundromat attempts to give an understanding of how the rich benefit from tax avoidance, offshore companies, and so forth. As well as how much the rich will do to keep those benefits. Rated: 7/10 Jan 21, 2023 Full Review Read all reviews

Weighty Connected L "God passed a law against greed, but that didn't stop people from breaking it."This 2019 film based on a book exposing the 2016 Panama Papers, which detailed a financial criminal scandal of tax evasions that affected many people In the United States is disliked by critics and by a majority of those who watched it. But for me it was quite enjoyable and informative (brought about Scott Z. Burns' script) and quite stylish and humorous (through Steven Soderbergh's direction), with great performances from Meryl Streep, Gary Oldman, and Antonio Banderas. The message of the movie is even better. Rated 4/5 Stars • Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/23/24 Full Review Dee B The movie was great and the message was better! Rated 5/5 Stars • Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/24/24 Full Review Jeff M This is going to be a very polarizing movie because of its lack of linear storytelling and its use of unusual techniques that may come across as gimmicky to some and inspired to others. While not entirely successful, I give it a firm recommendation because it kept me interested and entertained, and I felt like I learned something about the subject and now want to learn more. I do wish more time had been spent on Streep's Ellen Martin as she is undoubtedly the emotional backbone of the movie. And in juggling several storylines the film doesn't have an opportunity to dig deeper and allow for more insight which may have allowed a little more knowledge for those of us completely in the dark about this topic. And I am not a fan of the ending, which not only breaks the fourth wall, which is done frequently in this movie, but takes us out of the movie altogether - it felt like a stunt. Overall, though, it's a movie I want to see a second time to take it all in. Rated 3.5/5 Stars • Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/11/24 Full Review John B Considering the cast to work with, it wasn't very funny and mildly entertaining. The content was interesting about insurance companies and the scandals that they create through false claims & organizations Rated 3/5 Stars • Rated 3 out of 5 stars 08/18/23 Full Review Campolongo C This movie makes no sense. There is no real plot. Wasted time for Meryl Streep and Gary Oldman, which I adore (Antonio Banderas is only famous for his relationship with Melanie Griffith). What a boring movie, it could have been much better. Rated 1.5/5 Stars • Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 08/12/23 Full Review Fong Kok Hoong F Loosely inspired by Jake Bernstein's Secrecy World: Inside the Panama Papers Investigation of Illicit Money Networks and the Global Elite, Steven Soderbergh spins with sharp wit and sharper scorn three stories of money laundering into dapper entertainment that is light at heart but also heavy-handed.
