Day One Recap
Michigan State Track and Field's Ryan Talbot finished day one of the decathlon NCAA Outdoor Championships in 19th with 3843 points through the first five events at Hayward Field.

The fifth year from Fenton, Mich. entered the competition seeded 22nd in the field of the nation's best 24 season scores in the 10-event competition with a 2024 personal top score of 7535. Halfway through with the 100m dash, long jump, shot put, high jump and 400m dash, he would have some ground to make up on Thursday.

Talbot kicked off his third consecutive outdoor national championship meet in eighth place with a 10.79 sprint in the 100m dash, .11 seconds of from his season best. In the first field event of the day he leapt 6.38m in the long jump, bringing his score total to 1578.

Talbot would finish the day strong however, placing fourth in the 400m dash after crossing the finish line in 48 seconds flat, less than half a second away from a personal best.

Olympic Trials On Deck
While he was the lone Spartan athlete competing at the NCAA Championships, Talbot is not the last of the Spartans competing this season. Two other active Spartans and two MSU track and field alumni will compete at trials at the end of June for a shot at the quad annual summer Olympic games.

Fellow decathlete Heath Baldwin, current U.S. No. 1 and world No. 5 with a high score of 8470, qualified for the NCAA Championships but chose to forgo the meet in preparation for the U.S. Olympic Trials June 21-30. Baldwin was heptathlon runner-up at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships in February and holds five school records and two Big Ten records.

Junior Spartan Kate Stewart-Barnett, who redshirted during the 2024 outdoor season, prepares for the Canadian Olympic Team Trials for the 3000m Steeplechase, June 26-30. Stewart-Barnett won this season's highly touted Raleigh Relays steeplechase and has a PR of 9:56.76.

American triple jumper Tori Franklin is probably the most decorated Spartan Alum aiming for the 2024 Summer Olympic Games in Paris, potentially her second Olympic games. The 2015 MSU graduate and four-time U.S. Track and Field Championship winner finished 25th in the 2021 games and 2nd in the last two U.S. trials.

2022 MSU graduate Morgan Beadlescomb will compete at the U.S Olympic Trials in Eugene in the 5000m. The Adidas runner was a two-time NCAA runner-up in the 5K and a bronze medal finisher at the 2021 NCAA championships.
